UX #13:Why Patagonia and Nordstrom rely on Miller’s Law in UX.
E-commerce brands like Patagonia and Nordstrom are masters at organizing shopping content on their page in clean and clear layouts.
Check out how Patagonia organizes products into 3 columns. Or how Nordstrom alternates between using a 2-column approach, 3-column approach, and even a 5 or 6 column approach on their shopping page.
Why? Miller’s law states that the average person can only keep 7 (plus or minus 2) items in their working memory. This is why it’s best not to overwhelm users with more than 9 items in any one visual.
Where else have you noticed Miller’s law in platforms you browse?
